Song of the Day: Days of Wine and Roses

The song of the day for Wednesday, July 23, 2014 is “Days of Wine and Roses.”

About This Song

Today’s song is the theme song for the 1962 film of the same name, which starred Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick and was directed by Blake Edwards. The song was composed by Johnny Mandel, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Andy Williams recorded it in 1962 and his is probably the best-known recording of this song. Other recordings include those by Perry Como, and Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Days Of Wine And Roses” in 1965 for The Movie Song Album, released in 1966. It was arranged by Larry Wilcox and conducted by the composer, Johnny Mandel.

I remember hearing the Andy Williams version from the very beginning; it was, and still is, a lovely, sweet song. But I have to say that when I finally saw the film about 15 years ago, I realized that this version did this magnificent film no huge favor. For this listener, it didn’t begin to express the despair and horror of the alcoholism of the couple played by Lemmon and Remick.

Tony Bennett’s version is quite different: more introspective, much quieter. And much more suited to the arc of the film. Great job, here. Even with the same lovely tune, the deep sadness is much more profound here. Perhaps the producers’ tag line for the movie says it best: “This, in its own terrifying way, is a love story.”

Song of the Day: Trav’lin’ Light

The song of the day for Friday, July 11, 2014 is “Trav’lin’ Light.”

About This Song

“Trav’lin’ Light” was written in 1942 by Trummy Young and Jimmy Mundy, with wonderful lyrics by Johnny Mercer. TIt was first recorded by Paul Whiteman with Billie Holiday on vocals. It’s a wonderful, classic Mercer lyric and the tune is lovely. In addition to this recording, this song has been recorded by Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee, Queen Latifah, Shirley Horn and Sonny Rollins.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Trav’lin’ Light” in 1996 for the album Bennett On Holiday, released in 1997. It’s a great tribute to Lady Day; the selection of songs on the album is really quite nice, and looks at songs from throughout her career, both happy and sad.

I am dedicating this song today to my cat Hazel, who is reaching the end of her life today. She has been my constant and loving companion for nearly 15 years but it’s time for her to go. I will miss her greatly and I hope that, once more, she’ll be traveling light.

Song of the Day: That Old Black Magic

The song of the day for Thursday, July 3, 2014 is “That Old Black Magic.”

About This Song

“That Old Black Magic” was written in 1942 by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer for the movie Star Spangled Rhythm. From its first recording in 1942 by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, the song has been firmly ensconced in the American songbook. Other significant recordings over the years include those by Louis Prima, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and many more.

About This Version

Today’s version is from the recently released Bennett & Brubeck: The White House Sessions, Live 1962 recording of the 1962 concert in Washington, D.C. at the request of the Kennedy Administration as a thank you for the summer’s interns. Brubeck and Bennett each did their own portion of the concert. Towards the end, Bennett joins The Dave Brubeck Trio for a few completely improvised songs, including this one. Along with Brubeck was Joe Morello on drums and Eugene Wright on bass. Pure magic, indeed.
