An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Trav’lin’ Light

The song of the day for Thursday, April 30, 2015 is “Trav’lin’ Light.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “Trav’lin’ Light,” was written by two musicians: Trummy Young and Jimmy Mundy. Young was a trombonist who played with many of the great swing bands, including Earl Hines, Jimmie Lunceford and Benny Goodman. He also played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in the mid-1940s and then joined the Louis Armstrong All-Stars in 1952, where he stayed until 1964. Jimmy Mundy played tenor saxophone in the same era and was also a noted arranger. Together, they wrote the melody for “Trav’lin’ Light” in 1942 with lyrics from Johnny Mercer. Billie Holiday made the first recording of this song, but it has been relatively widely recorded, by artists including Chet Baker, Carmen McRae, Queen Latifah, Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O’Day.

About This Version

I have to start out by saying that I absolutely adore this song. The first time I listened to Tony Bennett sing this song, I listened to it constantly for days. I may be one of the few people in the world who not only have a “Trav’lin’ Light” playlist on their iPod, but listen to it regularly. Tony Bennett’s recording of this song is one of the most beautiful songs he’s ever recorded. I hope you like it too.

About Billie Holiday’s Version

Billie Holiday recorded “” several times, beginning with the first recording of the song June 12, 1942 with the Paul Whitman Orchestra. I’m not always a huge fan on Whitman, but this recording is astounding. It was released as single and also as a V-disc. Mundy did the arrangement and Trummy Young played trombone on this recording. Lester Young also played on this recording.

About Billie Holiday’s Version

Billie Holiday recorded today’s song early in her career, on January 12, 1938. This recording features an excellent group of musicians: Buck Clayton (trumpet), Benny Morton (trumpet), Lester Young (tenor sax), Teddy Wilson (piano), Freddie Green (guitar), Walter Page (bass), and Jo Jones (drums). It doesn’t get much better than this.

Song of the Day: Skylark

The song of the day for Sunday, March 29, 2015 is “Skylark.”

Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer
Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer

About This Song

“Skylark” was written in 1941, with music by Hoagy Carmichael and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Mercer is said to have worked on the lyrics for “Skylark” over a year. It is also said that he wrote the lyrics to express his feelings for Judy Garland, with whom he had been involved. Whether true or not, the song and the lyrics are outstanding and it easily became a jazz and popular standard.

About This Version

Today’s song, “Skylark,” while recorded at the October 28, 1959 session with the rest of the songs on Tony Sings For Two, was not released on the original LP release of the album. It was first heard on Bennett’s first box set: Forty Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett in 1991. “Skylark” was added as a bonus track to the re-release of Tony Sings For Two on CD in 1995.

I love this song and I really love this recording.

This wraps up our examination of Tony Sings For Two. I hope you enjoyed listening to these fine songs again as much I did. I’ve got something special planned for April, so stayed tuned!

Song of the Day: Out Of This World

The song of the day for Friday, March 13, 2015 is “Out Of This World.”

About This Song

This song was written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer for the 1945 movie of the same name. Out Of This World starred Eddie Bracken; however Bing Crosby dubbed the vocals for Bracken and introduced the song. Alec Wilder was a fan of this song, praising its ethereal quality and the excellent lyrics by Mercer.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Out Of This World” 1960 for his album Alone Together. It was arranged and conducted by Frank DeVol. It’s interesting to note that Bennett’s next album would be devoted entirely to the music of Harold Arlen: Tony Bennett Sings a String of Arlen.

Song of the Day: Come Rain Or Come Shine

The song of the day for Sunday, February 15, 2015 is “Come Rain Or Come Shine.”

About This Song

Today’s song was written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer in 1946 for the musical St. Louis Woman. The song itself is rather unusual, in that the same note repeated 12 times in the first two measures. In spite of that repetition, or perhaps because of it, the song works very well for the singer. Al Gioia in Jazz Standards says that “this composition tends to resist grandstanding, and instead appeals to the more introspective improviser.”

About This Version

Today’s version of “Come Rain Or Come Shine” is from Tony Bennett’s 1960 album Tony Bennett Sings A String Of Harold Arlen. I believe that it noteworthy that Mr. Bennett’s first album devoted to the music of a single composer was for Harold Arlen. This album was arranged and conducted by Glenn Osser.

About Today

Today we honor the great Harold Arlen, who was born on February 15, 1905 — one hundred and ten years ago today.

I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I do believe that Harold Arlen is the greatest composer of American popular song. I suspect that most adult Americans know at least one Arlen song that speaks to them, whether it’s “The Man That Got Away” or “One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)” or “Over The Rainbow” or any of the other of the many dozens of songs he wrote in his career.

A few weeks ago, I was listening to Barbara Cook on my iPod and was struck by how many of Arlen’s songs she’s sung over the years. But, again, every popular singer I’ve ever loved has always sung Arlen, from Judy Garland to Frank Sinatra. Even Stephen Sondheim, in listing the “songs I wish I’d written (at least in part)” named several Arlen songs: “Blues In The Night,” “Buds Won’t Bud,” “The Eagle And Me,” “I Had Myself A True Love,” and “I Wonder What Became Of Me.” (Sondheim also lists an equal number of Cy Coleman songs, which we’ll discuss another day.)

So, I’ll go on the record and say that I don’t think the American Songbook would be what we love today had it not been for Harold Arlen.

With the greatest respect, The Year of Tony Bennett honors the life and music of the great Harold Arlen on the anniversary of his birth.
