“It Was Me” was written by Gilbert Becaud in 1960 as “C’etait Moi,” with English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. It’s a beautiful love song that brings memories of summers past and, maybe, to come.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “It Was Me” in 1962 for his great album I Wanna Be Around, released in 1963. This recording was also used on the 1971 album Summer of ’42. Marty Manning did the arrangement.

The song of the day for Thursday, July 17, 2014 is “It Was Me.”

About This Song

Today’s song, originally titled “C’etait Moi”was written in 1960 by the French composer Gilbert Bécaud with lyrics by Maurice Vidalin. The English lyrics are by Norman Gimbel.

About This Version

This is one of my favorite summer songs. And according to this interview with NPR, Tony Bennett thinks so too.

“It Was Me” is dedicated to my online friend Jeff Macauley, whose cabaret show of songs by Norman Gimbel is titled “It Was Me.” One day I hope to see this show live, instead of in clips on YouTube.
