The song of the day for December 6, 2013 is “Just In Time.”
About This Song
“Just In Time” was written by Jule Styne, with lyrics by Adolph Green and Betty Comden, for the 1956 musical Bells Are Ringing, which featured Judy Holliday. It’s one of the great Broadway tunes that found a home in popular music. While Tony Bennett’s was the first (and greatest) recording of this song, other great recordings were made by Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin (who co-starred with Judy Holliday in 1960 film version of Bells Are Ringing).
About This Version
“Just In Time” is one of my favorite Tony Bennett recordings. Today’s is his first recording, made in 1956. This version appears in the 40/50/60 Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett compilations.
I thought long and hard about a proper song to feature today, with the death of Nelson Mandela so much on my mind. But, as Tony Bennett sang “Just In Time” for Martin Luther King in 1964, I felt that it was proper tribute to Mr. Mandela.
“Just In Time,” as well as all of the songs on The Columbia Singles, volume 4, is available from iTunes.
