Song of the Day: Love Is Here to Stay

The song of the day for Saturday, December 8, 2012 is Love Is Here To Stay.

About Love To Stay

Written in 1938 by George and Ira Gershwin, Love is Here to Stay was written for the movie The Goldwyn Follies. In his new book, The Gershwins and Me, by Michael Feinstein (highly recommended), Mr. Feinstein quotes Ira Gershwin as saying that this song was George’s last composition.

About This Version

This version of Love is Here to Stay is from one of most favorite of Tony Bennett’s albums, Hometown, My Town, released in 1959.

Love is Here to Stay, as well as the full Hometown, My Town album, is available from iTunes.

Song of the Day: Blues In The Night

The song of the day for Friday, December 7, 2012 is Blues In The Night.

About Blues In The Night

Blues in the Night was written in 1941 for the film of the same name by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. Arlen wrote the music first and wrote a true blues song. Johnny Mercer, who later wrote the lyrics, drew on his southern heritage to write exceptional blues lyrics.

About This Version

We have previously featured Tony Bennett’s first recording of this song, from his 1957 The Beat of My Heart. If you haven’t spent any time with The Beat Of My Heart, well, I’ll just say that this album, conceived by Tony Bennett, is remarkable and worthy of your attention.  That said, Tony Bennett first sung this song while serving in the Army in the European Theater, with the 225th Regiment Band. Alas, no recording of the song exists.

This version is from the 2001 Playin’ With My Friends: Bennett Sings The Blues. This album was precursor to the series of Duets albums containing some duets with singers including Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow, B.B. King, k.d. lang and Ray Charles.

Blues in the Night, as well as the album Playin’ With My Friends is available from iTunes.

Song of the Day: Cold, Cold Heart

In honor of Mr. Bennett’s appearance tonight in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the song of the day for Thursday, December 6, 2012, is Cold, Cold Heart, sung with Argentine superstar Vincentico on the recently released Viva Duets.

About Cold, Cold Heart

Cold, Cold Heart was written in 1951 by Hank Williams. Interestingly, it appeared on the B-side of single release, with Dear John on the A-side. In spite of being on the B-side, the song became a favorite of disk jockeys and jukebox listeners. Tony Bennett famously recorded the song in the same year, with an arrangement by Percy Faith. Cold, Cold Heart was one of the first country-western songs that crossed over into popular music, thanks to Mr. Bennett’s recording. It’s a heartbreaker of a song, which I’m sure contributes to its popularity 62 years after its release.

In fact, Google used the 1951 Tony Bennett recording of the song for its Valentine’s Day animated doodle  in 2012, shown in this video:

About This Version

For Viva Duets,  the Argentine star Vincentico sang Cold, Cold Heart with Mr. Bennett. This version features very nice guitar work from Gray Sargent.

Cold, Cold Heart, as well as the entire Viva Duets album, is available from iTunes.

Dave Brubeck

The Year of Tony Bennett is sad to announce that Dave Brubeck, one of America’s jazz artists, passed away on December 5, 2012, just one day shy of his 92nd birthday.

Dave Brubeck was born on December 6, 1920 in Concord, California. His mother was a pianist, and he studied piano as a youth. He entered college as a veterinary student, but his professors there convinced him that his path was in music. He graduated with a degree in music, even after it was discovered that he could not read music.

Upon his graduation in 1942, Brubeck was drafted and served in Patton’s Third Army during World War II. He formed one of the first racially integrated Army bands, The Wolfpack, which performed for soldiers during the war. It was there he met Paul Desmond, with whom his career would always be linked.

After the war, Brubeck studied with Darius Milhaus at Mills College in Oakland, California. He helped establish Fantasy Records in Berkeley, California (the 1975 Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album was released on the Fantasy label). He formed the Dave Brubeck Octet and began to build his reputation as a jazz pianist.

In 1951, he founded the Dave Brubeck Quartet, with Paul Desmond on saxophone. In 1956, the drummer Joe Morello joined the Quartet, which helped advance the advanced rhythmic experimentation that they later became known for. In 1959, they released Time Out, which featured songs that are well-known today: Take Five and Blue Rondo a la Turk. The Quartet remained successful until they disbanded in 1967.

In the period following the Dave Brubeck Quartet era, Mr. Brubeck turned to composing longer orchestral and choral works, as well spending some well-earned time with his family. Four of his six children are professional musicians.

Mr. Brubeck received many honors in his lifetime, including:

  • 1954 – Time Magazine Man of the Year
  • 1994 – National Medal of Arts, National Endowment for the Arts
  • 1994 – Downbeat Hall of Fame
  • 1996 – Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
  • 2007 – BBC Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award
  • 2008 – Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy by the US State Department
  • 2008 – Kennedy Center Honoree
  • 2008 – Inducted into the California Hall of Fame
  • 2010 – Miles Davis Award

Mr. Brubeck is survived by his wife Iola, his sons Darius, Chris, Dave, and Matthew (his son Michael pre-deceased his father), his daughter Catherine, 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

An obituary, written by Ben Ratliff,  has been posted on the New York Times.

We present this video of Mr. Bennett performing That Old Black Magic with Dave Brubeck in 2011 at Newport Jazz.
