Song of the Day: There Will Never Be Another You

The song of the day for Friday, February 22, 2013 is There Will Never Be Another You.

About There Will Never Be Another You

This song was written in 1942 by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon for the Sonja Henie film Iceland. Like most Harry Warren songs, There Will Never Be Another You found a home in the jazz and popular song repertoire.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this version of There Will Never Be Another You for his 1959 album In Person! with Count Basie and His Orchestra. I’ve loved this song for many, many years, dating back to my work on a Harry Warren revue at New Stage Theater in Jackson, Mississippi in 1978. I also have very fond memories of the use of this song in one of my favorite films, The World According to Garp from 1982.

It’s a beautiful and heart-felt love song and this version from 1959 is a sincere declaration of young love. The Count Basie Orchestra is wonderful on this song, as well as the entire album. Bennett also sings this song in a breathtaking medley with A Weaver of Dreams in Astoria: Portrait of the Artist, arranged by Ralph Sharon.

Song of the Day: I’ve Got Your Number

The song of the day for Thursday, February 21, 2013 is I’ve Got Your Number.

About I’ve Got Your Number

I’ve Got Your Number is from the 1962 Broadway musical Little Me, written by the team of Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh and featuring a book by Neil Simon.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded I’ve Got Your Number in 1962 for his album I Wanna Be Around. This album is probably best known for the title song and The Good Life. The entire album is wonderful though and I encourage you find some time to give it a listen. It’s got that classic early 1960s arrangement by Marty Manning with a very fine orchestra. The trombone gets me every time. And Mr. Bennett is quite perfect. As usual.

Song of the Day: You Don’t Know What Love Is

The song of the day for Wednesday, February 20, 2013 is You Don’t Know What Love Is.

About You Don’t Know What Love Is

This song, a major jazz standard, did not have a promising start. Written by Don Raye and Gene DePaul, You Don’t Know What Love Is was written for the 1941 Abbott and Costello film Keep ‘Em Flying, but was cut from the film. It turned up in a 1942 short B musical movie, Behind the Eight Ball.

In spite of this, the song is a true jazz masterpiece, beginning with the 1954 Miles Davis recording on Walkin’. Other notable recordings are by Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day and Billie Holiday among many others.

About This Version

Last summer, some tweeted that he was listening to Tony Bennett and Bill Evans and that the music was “bruised and beautiful.” I had much the same feeling today listening to Together Again, specifically You Don’t Know What Love Is.

All of the songs in Together Again, their second album after The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album, were recorded in September 1976. Critics are split on which of their albums is the best. I love them both, but Together Again is my favorite.  For me, it has deeper, less guarded and more emotional substance from both artists.  When I really listen to this song, as I did today, the pain of the loss is so raw and every nerve is exposed.

I have read that Evans and Bennett did some eighteen takes of this song. Wow.  Just wow.

The Song of the Day: The Lady’s In Love With You

The song of the day for Tuesday, February 19, 2013 is The Lady’s In Love With You.

About The Lady’s In Love With You

Written in 1939 by Burton Lane and Frank Loesser, The Lady’s In Love With You was first recorded by Glenn Miller. It’s been a popular song for many noted singers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Margaret Whiting, Gerry Mulligan, Dave Frishberg and Rebecca Kilgore, and John Pizzarelli.

About This Version

I’ve been a 1960s mood all day, having spent my lunch hour drooling over mid-century homes and furnishings (what I wouldn’t give to have my parent’s living room from 1963). Tony Bennett’s recording of The Lady’s In Love With You, from Tony Makes It Happen!, conjures up the 1960s perfectly for me. It swings and it’s a lot of fun with a great big band arrangement by the wonderful Marion Evans, who is arranging Tony’s next album with Lady Gaga.
