The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: I Concentrate On You

The song of the day for Monday, February 25, 2013 is I Concentrate On You.

About I Concentrate On You

Written by Cole Porter, I Concentrate On You was featured in Broadway Melody of 1940, starring Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell. However, the song was sung in the film by Douglas McPhail as Astaire and Powell danced to it. While not one of Porter’s most popular songs, I find it one of his best for the intricate lyrics and the very interesting verse.

About This Version

Tony Bennett has recorded this song twice. First in 1973, for his album Listen Easy from MGM/Verve. This version is from his Steppin’ Out album from 1993 and was arranged by Mr. Bennett and Ralph Sharon.

Song of the Day: Sing You Sinners

The song of the day for Sunday, February 24, 2013 is Sing You Sinners.

About Sing You Sinners

Sing You Sinners was written by W. Franke Harling and Sam Coslow and used in the 1930 film Honey, starring Lillian Roth. Even though Bing Crosby starred in a 1938 musical called Sing You Sinners, this song was not used in that film.

About This Version

This version is the first and the best. Tony Bennett recorded Sing You Sinners in July, 1950; it was released in October of that year. It features a great arrangement by Marty Manning. Unlike some of the recordings that he made when he first started recording with Columbia, this song sounds more like the Tony Bennett we know today than the early singer. I think it has everything to do with the material. He might have first recorded this song in any decade of his career and I doubt if it would sound much different than this version. And it’s a great song … then and now. He regularly sings this song in concert and still swings it hard!

Song of the Day: The Party’s Over

The song of the day for Saturday, February 23, 2013 is The Party’s Over.

About The Party’s Over

It’s pretty hard to beat any song composed by the great Jule Styne with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. And that definitely includes The Party’s Over, from the 1956 musical Bells Are Ringing, with Judy Holliday. The song immediately became popular, with recordings by Nat King Cole, Shirley Bassey and even Leslie Gore in 1963.

About This Version

The Party’s Over is the last song on Tony Bennett’s glorious 1959 album Hometown, My Town. One of the earliest “concept” albums, this album is, for me, one of his best (if relatively unknown) jazz albums. And, in spite of fact that we are presenting a single song as the song of the day, the album should be listened to in full to hear the story that Bennett is singing for us. It is the story of young man living in Manhattan, yearning for love, finding it and losing it in the end. But it is never trite and is beautifully sung. The album was wonderfully arranged by Ralph Burns.

I have loved this album from the moment I discovered it. I find that it’s an interesting bookend to Bennett’s 1990 Astoria: The Portrait of the Artist, where he looks back at his life in Astoria after returning home from World War II. If you can find time this weekend, do yourself a favor and listen to both these albums, preferably in a single sitting. Both are intensely personal autobiographies of a young man from the viewpoint of that very young man and the adult looking back. And it’s really, really good music.

Song of the Day: There Will Never Be Another You

The song of the day for Friday, February 22, 2013 is There Will Never Be Another You.

About There Will Never Be Another You

This song was written in 1942 by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon for the Sonja Henie film Iceland. Like most Harry Warren songs, There Will Never Be Another You found a home in the jazz and popular song repertoire.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this version of There Will Never Be Another You for his 1959 album In Person! with Count Basie and His Orchestra. I’ve loved this song for many, many years, dating back to my work on a Harry Warren revue at New Stage Theater in Jackson, Mississippi in 1978. I also have very fond memories of the use of this song in one of my favorite films, The World According to Garp from 1982.

It’s a beautiful and heart-felt love song and this version from 1959 is a sincere declaration of young love. The Count Basie Orchestra is wonderful on this song, as well as the entire album. Bennett also sings this song in a breathtaking medley with A Weaver of Dreams in Astoria: Portrait of the Artist, arranged by Ralph Sharon.
